NARRATIVE THERAPY
Narrative therapy is where a client-centred approach helps individuals reshape their personal stories to empower themselves. It emphasises that peoples’ identities are shaped by their narratives and meanings. People aren’t the problem; the problem is.
Externalising issues reduces shame and self-blame. In counselling, clients explore alternative stories reflecting strengths, values, and aspirations. Narrative therapy helps uncover neglected, empowering stories.
Deconstruction challenges limiting beliefs by breaking down unhelpful narratives. It aligns with your person-centred approach, helping clients reclaim agency.
Techniques include externalisation, re-authoring conversations, identifying contradictory outcomes, and writing therapeutic letters.
Whether you are facing anxiety, emotional difficulties, behavioural concerns, or are simply looking for a supportive space to explore life’s challenges, Mimicares is here for you.

Client Anxiety and Stress Management
Case Study:
The client attended the session expressing distress over their child’s behaviours, as well as their own experiences of abuse and trauma. They felt overwhelmed, questioning their ability to support their child while managing their own emotional pain.
Therapeutic Approach:
Using a narrative therapy framework, the session focused on externalizing the problem, recognising the dominant stories shaping the client’s perspective, and identifying alternative, more empowering narratives.
Reflections & Interventions:
- Externalising the Problem: The client was encouraged to view their struggles not as personal failures but as separate challenges they are navigating. By naming and describing the difficulties (e.g., “the storm of self-doubt” or “the echoes of the past”), they began to see these issues as something they can gain control over.
- Exploring the Dominant Story: The client reflected on how past experiences of trauma and abuse have influenced their self-perception, their parenting, and their responses to stress. They acknowledged that their current narrative is shaped by deep-seated fears and self-judgment.
- Reauthoring & Strength-Based Reflection: The session highlighted the client’s resilience and the ways they have already demonstrated strength in parenting despite adversity. Moments of connection with their child, patience, and small victories were explored, offering a counter-narrative to the belief that they are “failing.”
- Validation & Emotional Processing: The client was given space to express emotions related to their past trauma and current parenting struggles. Acknowledging their pain and self-compassion were key themes in reframing their experiences.
Outcome:
By the end of the session, the client expressed a shift in perspective—recognising that their struggles do not define them and that they have the capacity for growth and healing.
They identified small, actionable steps they could take to respond to their child’s behaviors with more confidence and self-compassion.
Next Steps:
- Continue exploring the impact of past trauma on parenting beliefs and behaviors.
- Develop coping strategies to manage emotional overwhelm.
- Foster a new narrative that acknowledges the client’s strengths and resilience.
